Finally I’ve done it, installed Tracks on Dreamhost after following the instructions by Frederik and some trial and error. Tracks is relatively slow so far for me but I’ll work on tweaking the settings; Dreamhost can be v. slow so perhaps it’s hosting rather than app.
More to follow …
Later … It seems I’d missed changing the details calling `dispatch.fcgi’ in `.htaccess’. Adding `f’ made a marked improvement. Tracks is still slow to start but once logged in things work smoothly.
Check the Missing Sync forums, Versiontracker and Macupdate for the tales of woe from Palm users who’ve trusted Mark/Space (note: the first Macupdate reviewer doesn’t specify their handheld and, as they’ve had no problems, it’s likely it’s a newer model.
Though I’ve never had a computer die on me I always imagine that it’ll happen any day; it might be a HD failure, it might be coming off my bike with my ibook on my back, either way it’s only a matter of time. I’ve used SuperDuper for awhile now and it’s excellent, but it’s still only synchronisation rather than back-up (as discussed extensively elsewhere). The best overview I’ve found is Matt Henderson’s. He does a good job of being clear and fair where lots of other discussions get rather heated. As well as confusion over duplication, mirroring, synchronisation and just plain copying, it’s not always easy to figure out which app is best for what job. I’m on the look out now for an easy way to synchronise files between machines. Not big files, not even very interesting files but stuff that it is handy to have access to in more than one place and where some kind of version control can be implemented. More later
Just had the chance today to play with a G3 Powerbook, a pismo with firewire: what a lovely machine. It’s (at least) six years old, has a whining original hard drive and a main battery that’s probably dead and it’s still marvellous. Aesthetically it’s colour, shape and proportions are pleasing, it’s comfortable to sit at and it runs OS X fine, even though it has only 128 mb onboard memory. There are ports galore along the back, neatly hidden behind a drop-down flap. The battery and DVD drive are easily removable and replaceable, and the hard-drive is only a step harder to pull and replace. It even has space for a non-Apple wireless card.
Now all I need to do is resuscitate the battery (or buy a ‘new’ one) and organise a new HD which I can let Tiger loose on. Oh, and return it to it’s rightful owner…
Bought a Treo 650 off Ebay last Saturday to update my 600. Slightly embarassed at my first ebay purchase but v. pleased when it arrived mid-week (some bits and bobs still to come from seller annoyingly). It’s new, or seems so, as described, and a big step up from the 600. I read someone somewhere say that the 650 was less a development of the 600, more an entirely new machine and I now see why. Further adventures in Palm land to follow.
Before then though a word about Orange UK. They said ‘£20 and at least seven days to unlock the phone’, I said ‘no thank you’ and turned to 650unlock.com. Twenty minutes and £9 later my sparkly new Treo is unlocked. The process is platform independent and straightforward.
Visited my sister in Paris last week for her thirtieth birthday. She’s rather bravely set off to live in the land of “sun, food and wine”, with great plans to learn the language, get work and live a good life. She’s off to a good start with a central Paris apartment, cheery flatmate and work for a German video artist.
The city was, as ever, beautiful, the food good and the culture marvellous. We visited the covered Arcades and I marvelled at the number of people, young and old, black and white, men and women, sitting about reading. Some folks in cafés, but many more just in parks, on benches, in the streets; enough to give one hope for France and the French.
This is just me seeing whether I can get Marsedit to work easily with Wordpress.
I can’t believe I spent so long trying to make Blosxom work: it’s taken me only an hour to get wordpress organised on Dreamhost. Now all I need is something to say…
Yup, this is it—brought to you by me and Dreamhosts’s fantastic seventh birthday offer: don’t delay, do it today!
